To Seed or Not to Seed
“No question but rolling out a carpet of sod is the quickest way to a beautiful lawn. But sod can get expensive, especially if your lawn is going to cover a large area. The alternative is seeding the area yourself, either by hand or with a method called hydroseeding, which has recently become quite popular. Long used by farmers to sow large fields, hydroseeding solves one of the main problems of hand seeding: even dispersal of seeds. The grass seed — a mix of varieties blended for your climate and the type of use your lawn will get — is mixed into a pulp made from virgin wood fibers, fertilizer and binding agents.”

Sprinkler Winterization is imperative to having a healthy sprinkler system; we can blow all water out your sprinkler lines with a high-volume air compressor. Most of Dr. Sprinkler’s repairs are for people who do not winterize their sprinkler system, so save money and winterize your sprinkler system.

How do I prepare my sprinkler system for the winter? The winter elements can be harsh, but Rain Bird, a top-notch manufacturer of sprinkler parts, has some tips for us:
“As the weather cools, it is important to prepare sprinkler systems for the onset of freezing temperatures. Water that is left in the system during the winter may cause valves or other system components to malfunction when the system needs to be operating at peak efficiency, during the spring and summer seasons.
The irrigation experts at Rain Bird recommend that homeowners that reside in areas with freezing wintertime temperatures take the time to properly winterize their irrigation system around the middle of autumn. Here are a few tips to get sprinklers ready for winter and ensure that systems are operating in the most water-efficient manner when the temperatures begin to warm up in the spring.
Insulate The Aboveground Pipes
It’s also a good idea to insulate any aboveground pipes, valves and backflow preventers. Wrap the valve in insulation (foam insulation tape and a plastic bag). Most home supply stores sell self-sticking, foam-insulating tape and foam insulating tubes for this task.

Drain The Pipes
Those who live in colder regions will want to remove the water from pipes to keep them from freezing and bursting. There are several ways to drain pipes, including draining the valves manually and using compressed air to “blow out” the system. Since there can be some risk involved when using the “blow out” method, it’s always a good idea to wear eye protection and contact an irrigation system specialist beforehand.

Close The Main Valve
Nearly every system has a main water valve that when turned, will shut off the flow of water to the irrigation system. The main valve is often located outside, but may be inside the garage, depending on the system set up. Shutting off the main valve will prevent any flow of water and protect the system from freezing up. If your system doesn’t have a main shutoff valve, you may consider purchasing one as they are inexpensive to install and a great way to protect your investment.

Turn Off The Timer
Automatic irrigation systems have a controller or timer. Most controllers have a “rain” or “off” mode that shuts off the signals to the valves. Turning it “off” allows the controller to keep all the essential programming information stored in it. The onlychange is that the valves will not activate. If you unplug or cut the power to your controller, be aware that you may need to reprogram it in the spring.

How a Sprinkler System Works
The controller sends a signal to the control valves in the control valve box. The valves then  open and send water through the underground water line. The water pressure causes the sprinkler heads to pop up and spray.

Preparing for Your Sprinklers

Installing your own home sprinkler system can save you money, but it's not one of the easiest do-it-yourself projects around. Planning and purchasing the right tools and parts are the keys to success. Keep in mind that putting in an irrigation system usually takes more than one weekend to complete. Maintaining an improperly installed system can be difficult to say the least, so take the time to do it right from the beginning. Always check your local building codes before starting an irrigation project.
In order to purchase the right components, you'll also have to determine your own specific:
  • Water pressure in pounds per square inch (psi).
  • Water meter size (for a municipal system) or well pump size (for a well).
  • Water service line size.
  • Water flow rate in gallons per minute (GPM).
  • Type of backflow prevention required by local code.

But don't be discouraged, the great news is that if you decide to hire a professional Mr. Sprinkler has the knowledge to design and complete an installation to make your lawn and gardens lush and green.

On the 4th of May, you sent two very knowledgeable and skilled technicians. Their work was outstanding! The system has never worked so well. I was particularly impressed by the fact that they worked very hard-approximately ten hours to repair the system! And, both of them would not take any food or drink (other than water) when it was offered. (They just kept on working hard!) Needless to say, we will be calling on you again for our future needs, should circumstances require it. Please express my appreciation to both of these men for a job well done. Sincerely, Bruce C.

To avoid overwatering on an allowed day, "you need to adjust your controller for multiple start times on ... one day." Restuccia said. "Water; let it soak in for an hour. Then, water again. ...

How much water do plants really need? That's probably the most common question asked during this current drought, say the experts, but also the most complicated.

"It all depends on plant type, if its location is in the sun or shade, what type of soil you have, if the property is sloped," Saare-Edmonds said.

That's why it's important to group plants with similar water needs.

Trees growing in a lawn are another issue," she said. "They're getting some water from the lawn (sprinklers), but they really need their own separate irrigation, less often but deeper."

Most water rules exempt drip irrigation. For example, Sacramento limits over-head irrigation (sprinklers) and hand-watering to two days a week. Residents with odd-numbered addresses may water Tuesdays and Saturdays; evens on Wednesdays and Sundays. Drip systems may be run any day.

"Drip systems need to be scheduled very differently," Saare-Edmonds said. "Sprinkler (run) times are measured in gallons per minute (GPM); drip systems run gallons per hour (GPH)."

Converting a sprinkler-based system to drip is easier than you may think. Even turf can be put on drip with grid systems installed under the sod.

Most important, drip systems put water where it's needed: at the roots.

"Instead of losing 35 to 40 percent (of water) to drift or evaporation, a drip system is 90 to 95 percent efficient," Troche said.

"Irrigation technology is getting better and better," Saare-Edmonds said. "There are a lot more options out there." Among those options are "smart" controllers. These take a lot of the guesswork out of deciding when to water.

"They're a little bit of money - usually around $500 - but they adjust water use on a daily basis, taking solar radiation, temperature, humidity and other factors into account," Restuccia said.

Other tools can be added to existing systems. Soil monitors (around $200) measure ground moisture and relay that information to the controller. Weather stations or rain sensors ($200 and up) shut off irrigation when it's not needed.

"I don't see many customers with rain sensors, but they're a good tool," Restuccia said.

These sensors help the controller do its job.

"It all comes back to the controller," Saare-Edmonds said. "It's the brain of your system. Use it."
